I was going to post a series of teasers before going whole-hog and posting the video, but life got in the way. This is my third lap on the circuit. Heck, it’s my third lap on any track in something bigger than a cart. It’s not my fastest, but I’m on the steep part of the learning curve and didn’t get video of the whole session. Next time will be better.

The road course incorporates the last third of the adjacent drag strip. The gate separating the two couldn’t be opened, so we were relegated to a small access gate which slowed us down quite a bit.

This was a track day, not a race. We were grouped by expected speed and experience. I was in the slow group (in order) with a Dodge Charger R/T, a Hyundai Genesis (4-cyl turbo), my WRX, and a retired Crown Vic police car which is being converted into a Lemons contender.

Passing was restricted to the straights and was only allowed when the slower driver waved you by. This made sure that everyone knew a pass was happening and minimized the risk of crashing.

I caught the Charger on lap 7 after he had been passed by the Genesis. He let me by at the start of lap 10. I caught the Genesis at the end of lap 10, but the first session was up.

We had three groups out there that day. This gave me the chance to ride along with more experienced drivers in faster cars. I’ll save that part of the story for another post.

Nice! When I did one in the beginners’ group, I gave a V6 Camaro a run for his money in my Mk4 turbo Jetta, both of us with instructors in the car. I suspect he wasn’t as ready to toss his (cleaner, newer) car into the corners as I was :D

Sounds like fun. I’ll try to get the video from the Crown Vic. That car is the definition of beater. It's amazing how fast they can go when they really aren't worried about the car.
